New Clash out today (32) with interviews with Amon Tobin and Greg Hedgepath.
Making good use of the things that we find
Finished feature on sound design for Clash 32 in record time, the Walter Murch interview got put back a little, though still hopeful, and secured a place on the Wall-E junket with the legendary Ben Burtt in November - the voice of R2D2 no less - all rather exciting. Through some sterling PR work, managed to set up and interview the super sharp shooting sound designer and ricochet master Greg Hedgepath at Danetracks, who turns out to be possibly one of the nicest people in show business, as well as the ever trusty Amon Tobin, who's always quick with a decent quote, this time about the joys of sampling wasps. Magazine comes out in three weeks. Two more pieces to go in this series.
Writing a short (300 word) bit on the score to Silent Running. It's due a DVD re-release in a couple of months, and I have played a bit of the score the last dozen or so of my DJ sets. It's an odd film, often overlooked, but very prescient in its anti-corporation bit, and the eco main theme. Bruce Dern is pretty terrible in it (but my piece doesn't mention that)
The next piece I'm writing for my Frame by Frame series in Clash is on sound design. Somewhat amazingly, I've managed to get hold of the oscar winning, 5.1 inventing, legendary master of the art - Walter Murch. I reckon I've seen most of the films he's worked on, and they dominate any all time top ten I might hope to compile. This is up ther ewith the David Shire and Lalo Schifrin interviews I did a couple of months ago, in - can't-quite-get-past-the-things-these-people-have-achieved-in-film. Piece will be up on the DC site when it runs in print.
